The weekend project begins

Marauding chickens.  I have four: Johnny, Dusty, Tammy and Dolly (I apologise). They’ve been getting adventurous and escaping into the neighbouring field; they’ve been flinging the mulch on a fledgling hedge far and wide; they’ve been exploring – where they shouldn’t (or I’ll be in trouble). They need some confinement: a chicken run. Luckily for me their coup is in a spot that’s easy enough to fence off, so that was this weekend’s project decided. After a couple of hours I’ve managed to dig three holes, cement in 3 posts and attach a length of chicken wire. That’s it for this weekend though as I need another post, more cement and (a minor oversight) a gate. The farm supplies doesn’t open ’til Monday, so unfortunately it’ll have to wait. The gang can strut their stuff safely enough though, so I reckon it’s been a good weekend. so far!

I’m looking forward to tomorrow now, with this job on hold there are all sorts of possibilities: sewing, drawing, hiking (don’t mention the ‘R’ word or I’ll cry).  There’s even a lacy jumper on the needles that needs some attention. Of course there’s also the lawn to mow and an allotment to weed…oooh, where to begin!

Back soon with another crafty project.  Have a good Sunday!

Houston we have a…TEENAGER!

Kim - 13th Birthday 07.03.11

This is as good a smile as you're going to get at this time of the morning and can't you see...I'm playing with my new Lego, it IS my birthday!

Kim's first birthday 1999

So cute on his 1st birthday - yes he was eating cake even back then!

Kim covered in nappy rash cream

Leave a baby alone for a minute and he'll even try and eat the nappy rash cream!

Kim drinking a milkshake at Tate St Ives

By toddlerdom he was on to the hard stuff. (Wasn't he a gorgeous wee one? What happened?!)

'Happy Birthday' cakes

After school he'll be tucking into these. And pizza. And popcorn. And ice cream. We're off to the cinema (a surprise for him!) to see Rango :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KIMI!  I LOVE YOU :D

Happy days.

Back to school

Half term’s over and out.  Kim gets on the school bus first thing in the morning and this last week will soon become a distant memory.  Before we forget all about it (in favour of focussing on Kim’s imminent birthday!) I thought I’d show you some of the lovely things we did together.  How about you, what have you been up to?  I hope you’ve have a good time.  The weather was pretty pants all week, but I’m sure it didn’t curtail your fun – you’re too creative to let that happen!

It’s been a quiet, homely half term here.  Domestic, with the odd cafe treat thrown in, late nights and pancake making, pop corn and The Fantastic Mr Fox – and he actually was fantastic!  Back to ‘normal’ tomorrow.  I wish it could be half term all over again…

Clearing out the cobwebs. And tinsel.

View from near Blackwater, dusk Jan 2011

Towards Carn Brea on my dusky run this evening

I’m sprawled on the sofa with a warming hot water bottle under my left hip and a purring cat on my lap, and I’ve just finished a mug of delicious, steaming hot chocolate.  The sort with chilli and cinnamon in it. The only way I could be more relaxed right now would be to be asleep.

But I deserve this rest.  Well, I think I do.  I’ve been for a run.  Ok so it was less than 3 miles and it was slow (my hip was aching :( ), but a run’s a run isn’t it?  And managing to force myself out of the door in the freezing cold at dusk deserves more than just a mug of hot chocolate (or two…).  It deserves at least a rest, and quite possibly a medal too.  Remind me to take something to cover my ears next time though.  I was wearing a cap, but something a tad longer might’ve been more appropriate in the biting wind.  I’m glad I wasn’t going any further like that – my ears would’ve had frostbite by the time I got home.

There’s another reason I think I deserve a bit of a rest.  I’ve been cleaning.  Clearing the decks.  Not that I’ve got very far and I certainly didn’t physically wear myself out doing it.  It’s more of a mental struggle.  Finding the motivation to sort things out after the decorations have been taken down is exhausting.  Once the residues of Christmas have gone I always want everything to feel fresh and clean, like the new start any new year promises.

I decided to start not with dusting and hoovering, that would have been too simple.  I started by washing all the cushion covers on the sofa.  And then the loose covers.  (Bearing in mind it’s winter and things take a whole lot longer to dry – was this wise?!)  Once clean I realised that there was plenty of fraying and even holes in the loose covers and on the seat cushions.  It’s an old sofa.  I bought it second hand when I moved here three years ago.  Though it’s old, it’s a good quality, Laura Ashley job.  The frame is fine and I replaced the seat cushions with new foam soon after I bought it.  I made new cushion covers for it too.  But then I ran out of cash and the replacement of the loose covers would have to wait.  They’re still waiting.  They’re very worn and the previous owner washed them at too hot a temperature, so they’re a bit shrunk (not that you can see that) and faded too.  So a simple wash became a mending job.  I’ve darned and patched and restitched and it’s looking fine.  Who knows how much longer it’ll last, but a few months would be great.  I’m lucky really, someone recently said my home was “very shabby chic”.  I know which word is true in that sentence, I thought, and it ain’t chic.  Anyhow, a few patches on the sofa don’t look out of place.  Just a shame it has to be out of necessity and thrift, rather than a design choice!

So one job finished I moved on to the next: clearing and wiping down my desk.  Why does everything (including Lego) get dumped on my desk? I hate things to look cluttered.  I’m not minimalist in any way, shape or form, but things should be in their rightful place, books on bookcases, plasticine and Lego in someone’s bedroom!  Clearing my desk has been exciting – it’s made way for some wonderful gifts I was given this Christmas…

My desk: V&A diary and 'cats' - plus the all important glass of rose!

Well spotted - I've moved on from the hot chocolate!

I was so lucky to receive an exceptionally thoughtful gift from my friend Chantal, the V&A patchwork diary, a wee pink cat from Kim (very cute!) and a whimsical black and white paperweight cat (he has a very heavy bottom!!) from Kim’s grandparents.  Each time I sit at my desk I’ll see these gifts and think of the very special people that gave them to me. (I’m feeling sentimental, get over it!!!)  So my desk is all fresh for the new year…

I love my little space!

And as it turns out, so does somebody else!

On the 8th day of Christmas

I’ve decided to show to you…

Blue patchwork cushion

Kate's sweet blue cushion

Blue patchwork cushion - detail

It's all in the details

It’s a ‘wonky’ (ie deliberately wonky) log-cabin block.  I like a bit of asymmetry; it adds something unexpected to the mix.  And gives the perfect place to add some pretty buttons.  As you can see, this one’s been simply quilted by hand in a white cotton perle thread. Blue and white is such a fresh combination, I never get tired of it.  It always reminds me of summer.  And a blue and white quilt I’m still working on, by hand.  Slowly.

To change the subject a little, how’s the new year going for you so far?  Every piece of chocolate in the house has gone, so I guess that heralds the end of the festive season here at The Old Chapel.   It was a relatively quiet one, which felt a bit odd at times.  I was craving company and laughter, high spirits, someone special to share it with – and snow!  The snow never happened.  Kim stayed in his pyjamas for days on end (literally) and only moved off the sofa and away from his new iPod to fetch more chocolate -though he did give me gorgeous warm snuggles on demand.  Santa didn’t bring me someone special for the rest of my life (he must’ve lost my list!), but he did bring the most incredibly thoughtful gifts from very special friends and family.  And I was lucky enough to spend a few hours with some of them over the week too.

Kim’s back at school on Wednesday and I’m dreading having to get into some sort of ‘normal’ routine.  My sleep pattern’s all over the place again; I’ve been getting to sleep between 2 and 4 in the morning and not getting up before 10.  It’s a bit of a nightmare. It started off with me not sleeping well and trying not to just lie there thinking.  I thought keeping myself busy would make me more tired and sleep more easily.  Instead I’m just up later and later and still can’t sleep.  And I still think.  And who needs to do that!

On that note I suppose I should try and get an early night, since it’s already gone 1.30am…  Maybe I’ll be awake enough to write about what keeps me awake at night another time.

Until then

On the 6th day of Christmas

If I can type quickly enough, I should just about get this posted before the 7th day of Christmas!! You remember this – the Fairisle hat with flaps that I made for Kim this Christmas?

Reindeer motifs around hat

The reindeers are off for a walk!

I think I promised you a picture of him wearing it, if he’d put it on his head!

Kim and his daddy on Boxing Day

This is the first time he wore it, on a Boxing Day walk along the cliffs from Porthtowan to Chapel Porth. He’s worn it every time he’s been out since. I am a happy mummy!  There’s nothing like the pleasure you get from seeing people enjoy something you’ve made especially for them; it’s a real buzz and makes all the effort so worthwhile :)  What did you make that someone else will love?  (‘A mess’ is not the right answer!)
