How to Guide

Introduction

It doesn’t have to be perfect, just good enough.

I have often been called “very practical” (though it’s true to say that such statements have often been sanctimoniously qualified with “for a woman”). And it is true, I don’t need a 10 year old to tell me how to work the tv or how to set up the parental controls on my laptop; I can use a multitude of woodworking tools without slicing my fingers to pieces; I can bang a nail into the wall without half the plaster falling off; I can sew a pair of curtains or make a patchwork throw (by hand or machine); I can organise an art exhibition, hell I can even run a company! So, dear reader, I thought it was about time I passed on my wealth of practical knowledge to the big wide world in a series of light-hearted ‘How to Guides’.

It doesn’t have to be perfect, just good enough. That’s my new motto. And, as a new motto should be put to good use, what better guiding principal could there be for the How to Guides? My guides will be written from experience and I’ll tell you of any pitfalls I come across as well as any excellent tips. Practical tips might include ways to cut costs or labour, ways to make you feel self-satisfied or even the envy of your friends (if you still have any at that point). Fittingly (considering the last few posts), one of the first Guides I will bring you will be a guide on how to bodge together a simple raised-bed. (Mine are still standing, so I feelĀ  at liberty now!)
